Batman Returns is a 2D platforming/beat 'em up game developed by a huge variety of studios. The movie was very popular back in the day, so it didn't take long for both Japanese and American developers to sweep up the property. While Sega handled development and release on the various Sega consoles, Konami had their own version for the NES and SNES. While fundamentally the same as far as characters and theming, the two versions differ in a few ways. The Sega versions are more focused on platforming and had branching levels that created different kinds of difficulty for players to choose from. The Konami versions, meanwhile, were more focused on the beat 'em up aspect. It had more emphasis on set-pieces from the film and featured a boss villain in each level.
