In order to always get a star when you're at a level's finish goal box make sure you're all at full momentum and jump before you get under the goal box. If you don't have enough speed before you get to it, you can always go backward to give yourself enough room to reach full speed.
You can go behind the scenery on any level that contains a white platform. Jump on the platform and hold down on the D-pad till your character falls behind all the objects on the level. You will be invulnerable to some enemies but not to others when you're behind the scenery so be careful.
In world 1-3 there is a hidden whistle in the level. Instead of completing the level in the normal fashion that you normally would, head to the end of the level, and right before the end of the stage, you will see a white rectangular platform. Hop on this platform and hold down on the D-pad till you fall through it, now go to the end of the level as if you're going to complete it and you will be given a whistle by Toad.
There is a hidden whistle In the mini-fortress in World 1. To obtain the whistle you first need to have a raccoon suit, then head to the door right before the boss where the Dry Bones (skeleton turtle) is patroling. Just on the Dry Bones and use this area to build up speed so you can fly to the top of the level to the right. All the way to the right on the top of the level there is a door you can't see, just hit Up on the D-pad and you will be brought to a secret room that contains a Magic Whistle.
In World 2 if you defeat the wandering Boomerang Brothers, you'll get a Magic Whistle.
